Oman partners with Ericsson for 5G, IoT centre

Oman’s ministry of finance (MoF) in partnership with Ericsson will open a centre of excellence (CoE) to explore the full potential of telecoms technologies, and facilitate 5G and IoT in the country.

Omani newspaper Muscat Daily reported, the MoF also signed a cooperation programme with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, and operator Omantel to establish the CoE.

The centre was labelled as a tool for Oman to use to diversify the country’s economy, by investing in projects that serve strategic objectives.

Ericsson’s part in this partnership will bring technical support and conduct training programmes, workshops, professional courses and mentoring programmes for members of the telecoms community, university students, researchers and innovators.

The vendor will also support developing the research projects particularly with those on 5G and IoT applications.

Dr Dhafir bin Awadh al Shanfari from the MoF stated: “We aim to establish a CoE in line with Oman’s Vision 20140 to contribute towards diversifying the economy, bolstering various industrial sectors and keeping pace with global developments in the field of telecommunications technology and IoT.

“We have launched 16 projects within the Oman Tawazun programme, designed to support the military and security sectors, and the development of human resources.

“We’re pleased to partner with Oman’s government agencies, Ericsson and Omantel to enhance our 5G core competencies and create a robust 5G ecosystem that will allow the Omani society to benefit from the anticipated growth opportunity 5G will bring.
