Data centre provider ST Telemedia Global Data Centres’ India unit has announced a new partnership with Indian cleantech company Avaada Energy to procure renewable energy.
The deal will see Avaada’s MHKhamgaon subsidiary provide STT with 99 million kWh of renewable energy for its facilities in the state of Maharashtra. The company has three facilities in Mumbai and one in Pune.
STT GDC says 34 percent of the power for all of its Indian facilities comes from renewable sources, and the addition of the Avaada Energy partnership will see the company achieve a carbon reduction of 456,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2025.
The company didn’t specify the type of renewable energy it will be using, but the website Data Center Dynamics notes that last year Avaada announced it was investing in a 350MW solar farm in Maharashtra, due to go live in January 2022.
ST Telemedia Global Data Centres is one of the fastest-growing data centre providers globally. It is headquartered in Singapore. It has over 120 data centres across key business markets including Singapore, China, India, South Korea, Thailand and the UK.
Avaada aims to deliver clean and sustainable energy for all. It possesses expertise cultivated over years of building and operating some of the largest solar and wind projects across 10 states in India.
Nor is this the company’s only foray into telecoms. Recently Bharti Airtel, one of India's largest telecom companies, announced that it had acquired an 8.53 percent stake in Avaada MHbuldhana Pvt to source 21.32 MW (DC) of solar power under the group-captive arrangement to help it reduce its carbon footprint.
