Indosat Ooredoo launches first commercial 5G services in Indonesia

Indosat Ooredoo announced the launch of its 5G services in the city of Solo (city of Surakarta) in Java, Indonesia. Huawei is the 5G network supplier for Indosat Ooredoo.

"The new 5G services in Solo will offer Indosat Ooredoo's consumer and business customers access to enhanced mobile broadband internet, empowering the city’s economic recovery and digital transformation," said a press release from the telecommunications provider in Indonesia.

President Director and CEO Indosat Ooredoo, Ahmad Al-Neama, said: “We believe 5G technology will help accelerate the digital transformation of Indonesian society and stimulate innovation in businesses across all industries.”

The launch of commercial 5G services is part of a new partnership with Surakarta Municipality to support its economic recovery. The partnership also includes collaboration in micro & small-medium-sized enterprise (MSME) empowerment, digital talent education, and smart city development.

Johnny G. Plate, Indonesia's minister of communication and IT said: "Even though 4G still serves as the backbone of our digital transformation, we hope that the initial commercialisation of 5G can be further our national vision to be a regional digital powerhouse. Together, let’s ensure the presence of 5G service will bring benefits to the nation and have a significant impact on economic recovery.”

Indosat Ooredoo plans to launch 5G mobile services in other major cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar.
