PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel), an Indonesian wireless network provider, working in partnership with Chinese equipment manufacturer ZTE, has deployed the first operational 5G system in the country's easternmost province Papua.
According to local media reports, this collaboration coincided with the momentum of the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) 2021 which took place from 2-15 October 2021.
On this occasion, ZTE supported Telkom Indonesia’s mobile division Telkomsel, in presenting the first 5G network in Papua, while providing the best experience for the community by utilizing the latest technology networks. 5G during the five-year sports week.
"ZTE supports the showcase 'Telkomsel 5G Experience Center' which is located in the Lukas Enembe Stadium area, Papua by displaying various 5G use cases," the report said.
Several use cases were presented for the Papuan people and visitors, including 5G virtual reality (VR) live which presents virtual moments of conditions directly in the stadium, 5G VR-based drones to see the entire stadium area, and 5G VR Tourism which presents educational content. A report in IndoTelko said that the Chinese company provided 900MHz/1800MHz/2100MHz/2300MHz multi-band devices and supported Telkomsel in building both the indoor system to increase network capacity and quality in the stadium, reporting that download speeds of up to 1Gbps with a latency of 8ms were recorded during the event.
Furthermore, ZTE was chosen by Telkomsel for the construction of 192 4G LTE base stations to optimise network connectivity at various priority points in Indonesia.
