Ukraine’s Kyivstar is providing free fixed broadband services to families in temporary housing as a result of being displaced by the country’s ongoing war against Russia.
TeleGeography reports that Kyivstar initially began providing connectivity in a modular town consisting of around 120 temporary homes in the Sykhiv district of the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. The operator has also connected around 1150 bomb shelters across Ukraine with high speed internet.
Kyvistar has called for community facilities to communicate their need for connectivity, and is also coordinating with regional administrations to deliver fixed and Wi-Fi access to more temporary settlements.
The operator’s fixed network division chief Serhiy Sukhoruk said: “We are confident that the possibility of access to the internet will help to improve life, study, work and improve the waiting time [for displaced citizens] to return home.”
In addition to repairing damage to its fixed network, Kyivstar’s technical teams are also implementing upgrades, with modernisation underway in several cities including Dnipro, Kyiv and Lviv, where it is now able to offer fibre broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps.
