Ethio Telecom announces QoE deal and passport payment service

The flurry of deals involving Ethio Telecom, the main – and for the moment only – mobile service provider in Ethiopia, has continued, with the purchase of a QoE solution and the introduction of yet another mobile-money-related service.

Ethiopia’s state-owned mobile provider is to deploy the SmartTraffic QoE solution from Allot to improve network performance and customer experience. Allot is a provider of network intelligence and security-as-a-service (SECaaS) solutions for communication service providers and enterprises.

SmartTraffic QoE provides comprehensive network traffic analytics, plus flexible, granular and precise real-time bandwidth and congestion management. The solution will be implemented to improve network performance and quality of experience (QoE) for Ethio’s mobile customers and to take advantage of its PCEF (policy and charging enforcement function) features to enable new and more competitive service plans.

Allot says its solution prioritizes critical applications over those that hog bandwidth based on key quality indicators (KQIs). Using those KQIs, network traffic is intelligently shaped to ensure that heavy users do not negatively impact the QoE of regular customers.

This deal follows last week’s news that Ethio Telecom has partnered with Ethiopia’s Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) to enable subscribers to the mobile money offering Telebirr to settle passport services-related payments through the payment platform.

This adds yet another institution to the many public and private groups that have integrated their services with Telebirr. According to Ethio Telecom 20 more public and private companies are planning to join soon.
