Telkomsel commences 3G shutdown

Indonesian operator Telkomsel has commenced the shutdown of its 3G network in parts of Jakarta after aggressively expanding its 4G network and launching a smartphone/data package to spur uptake.

Telkomsel has shut off 3G in East Jakarta and highlighted the cities of Tangerang, Bekasi and Tangsel as next, reported CommsUpdate. The switch-off is commencing as Telkomsel recently expanded its 4G network to East Jakarta in June.

It is pushing to expand 4G availability next in Central Jakarta, North Jakarta, South Jakarta and West Jakarta

To accelerate the adoption of 4G the operator partnered with Samsung and ecommerce platform Blibli to launch a 4G device bundling scheme. The programme offers a Samsung device paired with data packages which can be purchased on the Blibli platform.

Telkomsel general manager of loyalty and device partnership management Lolyta Sihite said: "We, together with partners such as Samsung and Blibli, continue to strive to present a variety of innovative programs that can accelerate the adoption of a more comprehensive digital lifestyle.

“For this reason, through this program, we want to open wider opportunities for all customers and the wider community who are still using 2G/3G services to be able to immediately switch to Telkomsel's 4G/LTE broadband services with 4G smartphone support that suits their needs, at more affordable prices.
