Telecom Namibia is partnering with OMDis Town Transformation Agency for a new fibre deployment in the formerly privately-owned diamond mining town of Oranjemund.
The Oranjemund Core Fibre Connectivity Project is part of the operator’s NAD2.3 billion (US$129 million) Integrated Strategic Business and Funding Plan, and will provide the town of Oranjemund with the infrastructure required for comprehensive digital transformation.
Telecom Namibia and OMDis will jointly invest NAD12 million into the Oranjemund deployment, with the first phase of the build-out slated to begin in November in the town’s central business district. Over the course of the next eight months, the project will see 67.6km of fibre deployed, connecting over 2000 business and residential customers.
The operator’s CEO Stanley Shanapinda said: “This partnership will advance a top of the range telecommunication network infrastructure to position the Oranjemund town as a smart city in the near future and will assist Oranjemund to cement its position as a centre for healthcare, agriculture, education, while opening opportunities for digital transformation, accessing enhanced digital and value-added services, like no other town in Namibia.”
TeleGeography reports that Telecom Namibia’s NAD2.3 billion investment strategy is aimed at extending the operator’s current 10,676km national fibre backbone with new deployments, thereby enabling increased download speeds.
