Sustainability is in the news again with initiatives in the Asia-Pacific region and Armenia garnering headlines in recent days.
ASEAN-based independent telecommunications infrastructure company EdgePoint Infrastructure has introduced new 360˚ Sustainable (360˚ S) sites, which it calls a key element in advancing its overall environmental, social, and governance ESG commitment.
In the inaugural rollout, the 360˚ S site concept will be applied to 20 new build-to-suit sites scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023 across EdgePoint’s footprint in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. By 2030, EdgePoint aims to apply the 360˚ S sites concept to all new build-to-suit sites across its footprint.
The company will also be defining a roadmap, which will include deploying innovative solutions, green technology and new practices across its footprint to reduce carbon emissions.
The company says that before each site is built, it will consider key elements including ensuring all bio-diversity aspects are covered before selecting a location, innovative designs with sustainable or alternative materials, remote monitoring to reduce truck rolls, responsible waste management, and using renewable energy solutions to power the sites.
Meanwhile Armenian operator Viva-MTS says it has been actively applying new technological solutions to make the running of mobile base stations more efficient.
Viva-MTS says it owns 13 base stations where the energy is supplied through photovoltaic solar systems. Only three of the base stations operated by solar energy are connected to the centralized electric power supply system.
Viva-MTS says the total operational savings made possible through the application of solar energy in 2021 have been equal to the sum that would be needed for 140,000 kilowatt/hours of energy. The use of solar energy also helps minimize the volume of diesel delivered to the base stations.
