Sri Lanka’s Dialog Axiata has claimed the country’s first successful mmWave 5G trial.
Conducted via subsidiary Dialog Broadband Networks, the tests used mmWave frequencies to achieve 5G download speeds of more than 4Gbps in Non-Standalone (NSA) mode, which Dialog claimed to be “significantly higher throughputs than current standards.”
In a statement, Dialog claimed that its planned deployment of mmWave “will enhance the fixed broadband performance levels and enable low-latency industry applications including industrial automation, healthcare, intelligent transport systems, and virtual reality.”
CommsUpdate reports that Dialog is also set to shutter its 3G network in 2023 as it looks to free up spectrum to boost its 4G network capacity. The operator announced in June 2022 that it would no longer offer new 3G connections given that 3G usage now accounts for less than 1% of its network data traffic.
Dialog stated that the decision will help it “provide the best possible mobile experience for its customers, and is part of its continued efforts to introduce best-in-class, next-gen technologies to Sri Lankan consumers.” The operator will continue running its 2G GSM network alongside its 4G network.
