Nokia announces new fibre broadband and testing initiatives in India

Nokia is continuing to grow its presence in India, with both an extension to its manufacture of fibre broadband equipment and plans for a dedicated device testing facility for enterprise customers.

Nokia has said that it will extend manufacturing of passive optical network (PON) optical line terminals (OLTs) at its factory in Sriperimbudur near Chennai in response to increasing demand from local customers in India. However, Nokia’s planned production of PON OLTs in India will help to expand the company’s production base and geographic reach, allowing it to serve international markets, notably in the Asia-Pacific region.

Nokia says that shifts in consumer behaviour, from home working to data-rich entertainment services, are driving demand for fibre broadband equipment. So too are the growth of FTTH and, of course, mobile operator requirements for next generation fibre in transport networks to deal with an expected surge in data traffic as 5G rolls out.

Significant funding from governments and private equity funds is also driving investments in broadband and fibre connectivity.

Nokia has also announced that it is expanding its lab-as-a-service (LaaS) solution to include the validation testing of industrial user equipment and third-party devices connecting people and machines over Nokia digital automation cloud (DAC) and modular private wireless (MPW) networks.

This will allow enterprises to streamline the testing of equipment and Industry 4.0 use cases over private wireless. Nokia now plans to open a new dedicated device testing facility in Bangalore to allow more customers to accelerate Industry 4.0 service adoption.
