The European Commission (EC) adopted a proposal to include roaming into an agreement to support war-torn Ukraine, a move that will enable Ukrainians to not pay additional charges in EU territories.
The act is part of an action plan to further integrate Ukraine into the EU single market and is the first extension of EU internal market treatment to Ukraine.
The next step for the proposal is consideration by the Council of the European Union. If the council agrees, a joint decision will need to be taken by the EU-Ukraine Trade Committee to grant mutual internal market treatment for roaming.
The EC noted in its statement, EU and Ukrainian operators are offering affordable calls between the two nations on a “voluntary basis”. With the proposal, around four million people fleeing the war can have affordable connectivity wherever they seek shelter in the EU.
