Brazil and China signed agreements to partner in the development of semiconductors, cybersecurity and 5G, reported Reuters, a move that could benefit underfire Huawei.
The agreement was signed during Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s official visit to China, where the two nations signed 15 memorandums of understanding surrounding the launch of a sixth satellite over the Amazon, cybersecurity and 5G.
As Brazil welcomes Chinese investment, many Western nations have banned technology and software from the far east nation due to security concerns, namely Huawei infrastructure and the social media app TikTok.
The agreements also paved the way for a Chinese semiconductor factor in Brazil, and Brazil “will not veto” construction of the factory and there is interest in developing the technology with the Chinese, revealed Lula's foreign policy advisor Celso Amorim in an interview with Reuters.
Huawei already has two infrastructure plants in Sao Paulo with one being a smart factory.
The US has long sought to intervene in Latin America to prevent nations globally from tapping into Chinese equipment.
Reuters also reported Lula visited a Huawei campus and trialled a VR headset, the president said the visit was "a demonstration that we want to tell the world we don't have prejudices in our relations with the Chinese."
