Vietnam lines up 700MHz auction after 2300MHz disappointment

Vietnam is preparing to auction 700MHz spectrum for mobile use.

The 5G-capable spectrum is now vacant as a result of Vietnam’s switch from analogue to digital TV. VietNamNet reports that the Authority of Radio Frequency Management (RFD) will allow operators to use the frequencies for both 4G and 5G use.

The spectrum has been earmarked for mobile use since December 2019, when the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) published Circular No. 19/2019/TT BTTTT, which laid out plans to use the airwaves between 694MHz-806MHz for mobile services. The circular came into force on 16th February 2020.

It remains to be seen whether the spectrum will in fact attract bidders; 2300MHz spectrum licences were put up for auction earlier this year, but all of them went unsold.
