Wind power is in the news again, with Google signing a power purchase agreement (PPA) to procure renewable energy from a wind farm in Poland and Amazon announcing a new 198 megawatt (MW) wind farm in India.
Polish telecoms and media group Polsat Plus Group has announced that Google will offtake from its ZE PAK wind farm in Przyrów, in southern Poland, to power Google Cloud’s operations. ZE PAK is a power engineering company with which Polsat is partnering to move into the energy space.
The ZE PAK wind farm begins operations in Q4 2024. The 50.4MW farm will consist of 14 turbines. Polsat Plus Group, which also offers solar energy, plans to migrate part of its IT infrastructure to Google Cloud.
According to news resource Data Centre Dynamics, this is Google Cloud’s first renewable energy contract in Poland. Google launched a Polish cloud region in April 2021.
Meanwhile, Amazon will soon have its own 198 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Osmanabad, Maharashtra in India, bringing the company to 50 wind and solar projects across the country and surpassing 1.1 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity.
Amazon is both the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy globally and the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in India. The company says its aim is for its wind and solar projects to help power the company’s operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, while also bringing jobs and economic benefits to local communities.
The wind farm in Osmanabad is the seventh utility-scale renewable energy project announced by Amazon in India within the past year. The company has also announced a total of 43 rooftop solar projects, which are helping to power local Amazon facilities.
