Nokia said on Monday that Philippine operator Globe Telecom has deployed its AI-powered energy efficiency software via a SaaS model to lower network power consumption and costs.
Nokia’s AVA for Energy Efficiency SaaS uses artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms that will enable Globe to shut down idle and unused equipment automatically during low usage periods.
Nokia says this will help Globe save on operational and power consumption costs without sacrificing network quality. In a proof of concept, Globe achieved equivalent annual power savings of around 3-6% when it combined the AVA software with the RAN’s power saving feature.
Meanwhile, using the software via a SaaS model means Globe can avoid large up-front capex and having to perform on-site software maintenance and updates.
“Network energy consumption is an issue that will only continue to grow in importance for CSPs as they step up their efforts to harmonize network efficiency and environmental objectives,” said Susanna Patja, APJ market leader for Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, in a statement.
“Efficient energy consumption is a strategic imperative for our network decarbonization initiatives and net zero targets,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group’s chief sustainability and corporate communications officer. “Deploying this solution will help reduce power costs, with no impact to customer experience.”
