Batelco signs sustainability MoU with Ericsson

Bahrain operator Batelco, part of the technology-focused Beyon Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with tech giant Ericsson to expand its sustainability initiatives and circular economy practices.

As part of the collaboration, both Batelco and Ericsson will work together on introducing programmes that support sustainability initiatives. In addition, Batelco will have access to Ericsson’s expertise and global practices pertaining to sustainability and environmental impact.

One notable aspect highlighted by the partners is the Ericsson Product Take-Back Programme, which addresses the issue of e-waste and aims to reduce environmental impacts with the highest international industry standards.

The programme focuses on product optimisation and extending product life cycle through recycling materials, thereby minimising, or eliminating, e-waste while also ensuring proper recycling and safe disposal of discarded products.

Additionally, Ericsson says it will conduct comprehensive sessions on climate action, net zero and other sustainability topics, and provide Batelco with insights on the use of network solutions and technologies that increase power efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.

The aim of the collaboration is to support Batelco’s aspiration of having greener networks and achieving net zero emissions, as well as implementing circular economy practices such as offering responsible ways to recycle discarded electronic devices.

This is not Ericsson’s only recent sustainability initiative in the Middle East. Late last year we reported that Ericsson and United Arab Emirates operator du had signed a partnership agreement to offer the Ericsson Connected Recycling platform as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) in the UAE.
