Rohde & Schwarz to showcase next-gen DPI technology at MWC

Test and measurement company Rohde & Schwarz will showcase its next-generation deep packet inspection (DPI) technology at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, which it claims will enhance networking and cybersecurity.

Through its subsidiary ipoque, Rohde & Schwarz will demonstrate its DPI and Encrypted Traffic Intelligence (ETI) solutions at the telecoms intrustry’s largest event of the year which takes place between February 26th to 29th.

The ETI technology was created by ipoque and introduces a first-of-its-kind enhancement to traditional DPI, the company said, to address challenges stemming from the loss of traffic visibility from emerging encryption protocols.

The solution leverages machine learning and deep learning techniques. It also reduces network blind spots and improves traffic observability and monitoring.

ETI tackles stringent techniques for encryption, obfuscation and anonymization, which can all lead to progressive eroding of traffic information. It does this by leveraging ML and DL algorithms, high-dimensional data analysis and advanced caching methods, and combines them with statistical, behavioural and heuristic analysis. A signature library is updated weekly to complement the above suite of features.

“Application awareness from our ETI technology helps telecom operators shape their networks dynamically. This can be observed in 5G network slicing, where URLLC-type applications are continuously monitored for SLA compliance, and in QoE management, where bandwidth-intensive applications such as OTT video streaming are routed separately,” said Dr. Martin Mieth, VP Engineering at ipoque.

An example given was ETI’s ability to distinguish OTT video traffic between on-demand streaming and downloading, enabling operators to switch routes and forward traffic for compression and caching.
