India’s Nxtra enhances renewable energy commitment

Indian data centre company Nxtra by Airtel has announced an agreement with renewable energy specialist Ampln and leading distributed energy company Amplus Energy to procure an additional 140,208 MWh of renewable energy.

With this deal Nxtra says it has enhanced its existing commitment of reducing its carbon footprint through renewable energy sources annually by about 99,547 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).

AmpIn Energy and Amplus Energy will set up captive solar and wind power plants of 48 MWdc (megawatts defined conditions: power output given a specific set of circumstances) and 24.3 MW respectively for Nxtra’s data centres in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.

Nxtra says the 25-year agreements are in line with Nxtra’s commitment to achieving its net-zero target of 2031 and further strengthen its credentials as India’s largest chain of green data centres.

Nxtra’s other interventions to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its operations by 100% by FY2031 include: accelerating the adoption of green energy across all its operations, putting in place energy efficient infrastructure and processes, and implementing sustainable business practices at its workplaces.

Nxtra by Airtel has the largest network of data centres in India, with 12 large and 120 edge data centres across the country. It plans to build six new hyperscale data centres across key metro cities in India and expand its capacity to over 400 MW. It is a subsidiary of global communications solutions provider Bharti Airtel.

Amplus Solar is Asia’s leading distributed energy company, providing low-carbon energy solutions to industrial and commercial customers. AmpIn Energy Transition develops, builds, owns and operates renewable energy power plants delivering power to both industrial and commercial and utility customers.
