Colt DCS buys land in Chennai for new hyperscale data centre

Colt Data Centre Services (Colt DCS) announced on Thursday that it has purchased a new 10-acre plot in Ambattur, Chennai, on which it will build a hyperscale data centre to expand its presence in Southern India.

The new site will be Colt DCS’ 18th data centre globally, and builds on the company’s presence in India following the Phase 1 completion and first customer in its data centre in Mumbai.

The new site is set to deliver a minimum of 70 MW of IT capacity, which Colt DCS said will provide the infrastructure capacity for the rapid digitalisation of industry, mass cloud adoption and emerging technology such as AI. Colt DCS also said the large-scale site will give customers a huge amount of capacity to grow into.

The site is set to be completed in 2027. Colt DCS said it is working with local contractors and supply chains to reduce the environmental impact of the scope 3 emissions and stimulate the economy of the surrounding area.

Pratap Mane, country head of India at Colt DCS, said the company picked Ambattur for the site of the new data centre because of its status as a fast-growing digital hub as the Tamil Nadu State Government proactively takes steps to develop Chennai as a top destination for data centres in India.

"Chennai has always been a strategically important location for us for our expansion plans in India, due to the presence of multiple cable landing stations and large enterprise businesses,” he said. “We expect the demand for data centres to continue to grow exponentially with the increased digitisation, adoption of AI and cloud services in India.”
