Saudi Arabian telco stc Group says it has partnered with Huawei Technologies to complete what they claim is the first long-haul 800G-per-channel trial on a live network in the MENA region.
The trial was conducted on stc’s live optical network between Riyadh and Makkah at a distance of over 1,000 km. According to Huawei, the live colorless-directionless-contentionless (CDC) network used a high-performance 800G-per-channel optical module powered by a built-in high baud bandwidth modulator and super 16QAM modulation with a channel-matched shaping (CMS) 2.0 algorithm.
Huawei said the live trial demonstrates not only that the technology works, but also that stc’s systems can monitor and sustain complex link environments in real-time.
Huawei also said the 800G-per-channel technology makes it possible to deliver up to 64 Tbps single-fibre capacity to meet ever-increasing bandwidth demand from all users, and reduce the per bit power consumption by more than 50% compared with 100G channels.
Victor Zhou, Huawei's president of Optical Transmission Domain, said that stc Group networks can use 800G-per-channel to transport more data for every wavelength deployed across longer distances without regeneration, which reduces power and transport costs, and supports efficiency standards across stc Group's infrastructure.
"This long-haul 800G live trial in the stc network is a significant milestone in the ultra-high-speed optical industry,” Zhou said.
