Thai telecoms operator True Corp says that its 5G revenue is now growing at 15% per year, which it credits mainly to its strategy of targeting domestic and international tourists with 5G packages.
According to the Bangkok Post, True Corp CEO Manat Manavutiveth said that 60% of inbound visitors are applying for its 5G service. He also said the number of inbound tourists for 2024 is expected to reach 38 million, exceeding previous forecasts of 35 million.
True partnered with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in April to launch its “True Nationwide, For Everyone” campaign to leverage tourist traffic in order to showcase its 5G chops and boost its prepaid SIM and roaming business.
Under the campaign, True and TAT have been promoting exclusive deals for domestic and international tourists who use True’s network, from food and beverage promotions at airports, cafes and restaurants to free accident insurance and “coffee tourism” activities in secondary cities. The campaign also targets ‘digital nomads’ that travel for leisure whilst also leveraging digital technology to work remotely.
Manat said the 5G tourist campaign not only benefits tourists, but also related local businesses, including hotels, hostels, restaurants and venue booking services, the report said.
Manat also told the newspaper that True currently has 11 million 5G users with an ARPU of around 500 baht (around US$13.60), which he said is 20% higher than ARPUs for its 4G service.
