Colombian operator Claro deployed the first stage of its 5G network offering fixed wireless access (FWA) broadband with vendor partner Nokia, in only four months since securing its 5G licence.
This initial deployment involved switching on 1,000 sites nationwide in Colombia’s six largest cities.
The deployment began in Medellin and will then expand to Bogotá, Cali, Bucaramanga, Cartagena and Barranquilla. Claro will connect 14 more cities to 5G later this year, said Claro Colombia president Rodrigo de Gusmao in a translated statement.
Gusmao added the Claro was the first operator to connect consumers to 5G through broadband Internet.
Nokia said in a separate statement its is contracted to supply Claro equipment for indoor and outdoor scenarios, and deploy an additional 400 5G sites.
