Viettel tests standalone 5G

State-owned operator Viettel labelled its latest standalone 5G network test as a “major step” towards its expected commercial deployment this year.

VN Express reported, Viettel completed the tests three months after gaining its 5G licences from the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Viettel did not disclose a date for when it will launch 5G services but the Vietnamese operator is expected to do so this year.

VN Express reported there were standalone 5G networks in 58 countries out of 175 that were testing or had commercially deployed.

Viettel said with standalone 5G technology it could offer subscribers and enterprises enhanced services such as calls with built-in translation, high speed data transfer, and the option to replace fibre services.

The operator is also working with major smartphone vendors to update the firmware of devices to tap into next generation 5G networks. Viettel conducted a call using non-standalone 5G technology back in 2019.
