Brazil regulator reveals 5G coverage of 94.5%

Brazil’s telecoms regulator Anatel announced 94.5% of Brazilian will theoretically have access to 5G from today (September 2) after releasing licences to operators for spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band.

In a statement from Anatel, the regulator said that it provided licenses for the activation of 5G base stations in 194 more municipalities last week (August 27). In total, 5,002 are now connected out of Brazil’s 5,570 municipalities. Around 201.7 million Brazilians live in these locations, which equates to 94.5% of the population.

Anatel stated 5G will not be immediately available at these locations and that it depends on deployment plans of operators.

Gaisipi, the technical group that coordinates the deployment of 5G internet in the country, approved the spectrum access after migrating satellite television signal in C band (4 GHz to 8 GHz) to the Ku band (12 GHz to 18 GHz).

In other news from Anatel, the regulator signed an MoU with Suriname’s telecoms regulator Telecommnicatie Autoriteit Suriname to cooperate in initiatives that enhance consumer protection and spectrum monitoring.
