Claro Colombia to inject $200M into fibre for AI prep

Claro Colombia announced US$200 million will be used to upgrade its fibre optic network, a move to pave the way for advanced technologies such as AI.

In a translated statement, the America Movil-owned operator detailed that the investment will benefit 1.5 million homes.

Claro Colombia President, Rodrigo de Gusmao, said the company is working to modernise its network and lay the foundations for AI to strengthen Colombia. He noted the infrastructure that is being lad down is essential for AI solutions such as telemedicine and industrial automation. Gusmao noted AI adoption has the potential to boost Colombia’s GDP by 10% over the next 15 years.

“This investment is the first step to ensure that the country is prepared to take advantage of this opportunity,” added De Gusmao.

AI requires high-speed connectivity but also low latency to enable solutions such as autonomous robots to operate effectively.
