Internet exchange operator DE-CIX has struck a deal to enter the South American market via Brazil’s Elea Data Centers, which will host its first two IX PoPs in Brazil.
Under a partnership deal announced on Wednesday, DE-CIX's PoPs will be deployed at Elea's São Paulo (SPO1) and Rio de Janeiro (RJO1) data centres. The IX PoPs in Brazil are planned to be ready in early 2025 and will be integrated into the global DE-CIX ecosystem, providing an interconnection platform for local ISPs, content delivery networks, network operators, cloud service providers, and enterprises.
According to DE-CIX CEO Ivo Ivanov, the DE-CIX PoPs will boost the growing local ecosystem of cloud service providers (CSPs) in Brazil, which includes big names like AWS, Microsoft, and Oracle, who are either already on location or planning to enter the market. CSPs will be able to access to worldwide cloud zones via the PoPs, while enterprise networks can connect to clouds directly over the DE-CIX Cloud Exchange.
“ISPs and enterprises alike can leverage local, regional, and international interconnection opportunities, especially with the USA and Southern Europe, to reach content, cloud, and other networks not yet present in Brazil,” Ivanov said in a joint statement. “DE-CIX is the first IX operator in the country to offer a full range of enterprise-grade interconnection and cloud connectivity services.”
The DE-CIX tie-up is also good for Elea, which currently runs nine data centres in five different metros, all powered by 100% renewable energy, said Elea Data Centers chairman Alessandro Lombardi.
"The Brazilian DE-CIX IXs will [add] to Elea's interconnected platform that already includes access to the Brazilian IX, the IX.BR,” Lombardi said.
At the start of this year, Elea announced a new R$570 million (US$115.9 million) issuance of debentures linked to sustainable goals to expand its data centre infrastructure in Brazil.
