Shanghai Telecom introduces HD IPTV

Over the last year, China has seen a rapid expansion in triple-play services, following the launch of a massive FTTH network by China Telecom. Shanghai Telecom – an operating unit of China Telecom which began a triple-play programme in June 2009 - is now preparing to launch HD IPTV services over this network.

Shanghai Telecom has selected optical gateway technology from FiberHome, one of China’s leading telecommunications providers, in order to target FTTH deployments. The recent expansion of China’s FTTH network has driven demand for wireless HD IPTV home networking, which in itself reflects a desire to move towards a wireless lifestyle.

FiberHome’s HG500 and HG230 optical network gateways are enabled with carrier-grade Wi-Fi for IPTV streaming, as well as data and voice services. The company selected the CL1800 Wi-Fi system-on-a-chip (SoC) from Celeno Communications to enable its gateway tech. By leveraging Celeno’s Wi-Fi chipset, the FiberHome optical gateway is able to distribute IPTV wirelessly, providing cost-effective home network self-installation without the requirement of house wiring.

The solution is on display at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai (May 1st – October 31st), and will be rolled out in Shanghai Telecom’s metropolitan fibre network.
