Cloud computing is on the rise in Latin America following the launch of cloud services in Argentina by Telefónica. The operator has introduced a new service called Aplicateca which uses NEC’s cloud platform.

The two firms began a partnership in February 2011 to promote cloud computing in Latin America. Telefónica is now approaching its customers with a new option based on the SaaS business system (Software as a Service), designed to facilitate access to a variety of digital applications and services where the customer only pays for the number of licences that are used.

This project allows Telefónica to boost its services in Latin America by using a more efficient model that reduces time-to-market. Initially, Telefónica aims to support small and medium sized businesses in Latin America by breaking down the current entry barriers to new technologies and IT applications, while encouraging an open environment for developers to launch new applications.
