MTN and Huawei sign innovation agreement

MTN has signed a business innovation deal with Huawei covering data services, enterprise, mobile financial services, rich media and wholesale.

The companies said that the deal would “move MTN and Huawei beyond the traditional trading relationship”, which stretches back 17 years. The firms will cooperate on researching strategies and planning business scenarios, as well as jointly developing and launching products.

MTN’s COO Jens Schulte-Bockum said: “In the historical cooperation between MTN and Huawei, Huawei helped MTN build a top-quality network with leading technologies, excellent quality, and zero network security incidents.”

Schulte-Bockum added that MTN would continue its focus on emerging markets, saying: “To further eliminate the digital divide in these countries, improve people’s lives, and achieve the vision of Digital MTN, it is willing to work with Huawei to bring benefits to the public and society.”

“MTN attaches great importance to cybersecurity, which is a global technical challenge. MTN will work with global partners to solve this problem and provide sustainable, stable, and reliable digital services for the public and society”, he concluded.

For the year ending 31st December 2018, MTN is expecting an almost twofold year-on-year increase in earnings, particularly now that it has resolved a spat with the Central Bank of Nigeria and resumed paying dividends to its shareholders. It will release its earnings report on 7th March.
